1994 m. balandžio 8 dieną K. Cobaino kūnas buvo rastas jo paties namų garažo antrajame aukšte, su šautine žaizda burnoje. Teismo ekspertizės metu Cobaino kūne buvo rastas toks heroino kiekis, kurio būtų užtekę trims žmonėms, bei nemažas kiekis raminamųjų. Atsisveikino raštelyje, kuris buvo rastas šalia kūno, Cobainas išpažino dėkingumą gerbėjams ir draugams, tačiau prisipažino, kad nebegali daugiau meluoti jiems kurdamas muziką, kuri jo paties neįkvepia. Šis teiginys irgi nėra visiškai tikslus, mat yra nemažai abejonių pagrįstų įrodymais, jog Kurtą Cobainą nužudė jo žmona – Courtney Love.
